TED Intro Animation | Opening Motion for a Global Stage
A motion case study centered on the TED intro animation: particles, light, information flows, and logo structures compress the idea of thoughts being connected and spread into five seconds.
This page is a case study and learning record; it does not imply authorship of or authorization by the original project.
Project Introduction
A project page organized from the publicly available TED Intro Animation case study, using the existing content modules to reconstruct its concept exploration, final keyframes, behind-the-scenes process, and credits.
Establishing a Global Stage in Five Seconds
TED launched a new intro animation alongside an update to its website, created in collaboration by Ordinary Folk and Colours And Shapes. In a very short time, the film needed to convey TED's essential character: making ideas visible, connecting them, and spreading them around the world.
This is useful as a motion portfolio case study because it is more than a simple logo reveal. It compresses brand positioning, particle systems, spatial depth, rhythm, and sound into a brief but complete opening sequence.

The final film uses particles, light, and logo structures to build a visual metaphor for 'ideas worth spreading.'

Several visual routes explored sharing, connection and global idea exchange.
Approach 1 / Particles and Light Waves
The first direction treats TED as a catalyst within a global network of ideas. Particles and light waves interact across a vast space, emphasizing transmission, collision, and moments of illumination.
Space, points of light, and paths together form a concept sketch of ideas being sparked.
Approach 2 / Information Flow and Form Generation
The second direction is closer to an organic information flow: a large volume of content transforms in motion and gradually reveals the TED logo. This concept treats TED as a container for knowledge and viewpoints.
A more organic motion direction that uses transformation and information flow to express content being gathered.
Final Direction / Generating the Logo from a Structure of Ideas
The final direction generates the TED logo from a set of organized idea structures. Red particles connect, spread, and regroup like nodes, turning the platform itself into a mechanism for sharing ideas.
The keyframes show a range of visual states, from particles in a dark scene and the logo on white to an expanding red network.
Behind the Scenes / C4D and AE Compositing
The base particle-spread animation was created in Cinema 4D, then brought into After Effects with the TED vector logo and multiple effects passes for compositing. The final image needed to preserve brand recognition, motion rhythm, and the metaphor of information spreading at the same time.
From 3D particle passes to the final composite, the motion language is compressed into a clean, legible brand intro.
