Five AE Typography Motion Studies
Five AE motion variations built around the same set of type, using position, trails, blur, scale, and timing controls to examine how the letterforms move.

An AE typography motion experiment that tests five different reveal methods and timing relationships using the same set of type.
Project Challenge
Typography animation can easily become a stack of effects. The challenge was to give each variation a clearly distinct motion approach while maintaining a consistent black-and-white composition and reading rhythm.
My Role
I designed the typography animations, shaped the keyframe timing, handled trails and blur, exported the GIFs, and broke down the process behind each motion study.
Key Design Decisions
- Using the same set of type keeps attention on the differences between motion approaches.
- Keeping the composition black and white reduces color interference, making the letterforms, speed, and rhythm easier to compare.
- Breaking out each GIF separately places the motion result and its production decisions within the same reading unit.

01 | Progressive Letter Build
Motion description
The letters appear one by one from left to right. Each new character enters with a subtle gray trail and positional offset, then brightens and aligns in sequence. The continuous progressive rhythm allows the complete wordmark to form naturally.
Motion breakdown
In AE, the characters can be controlled individually or advanced by character with a text animator. Each character starts with a slight offset and lower opacity, entering in reading order with staggered timing. The gray trail is created by duplicating the text layer, lowering its brightness and opacity, and delaying it slightly. Finally, all characters return to a shared position and assemble with eased curves.
Adjustments & Decisions
If the interval between characters is too long, the wordmark feels loose; if the trail is too strong, it interferes with recognition of the primary type. Shortening the timing offsets in the second half lets the letters draw together more naturally.

02 | Delayed Assembly
Motion description
The animation begins with a single letter as the visual starting point. After a brief hold, the remaining characters enter in quick succession. The shift from slow to fast rapidly assembles partial information into the complete wordmark.
Motion breakdown
The first character appears alone to establish a clear starting point and holds briefly. The remaining characters then enter through position and opacity keyframes, with increasingly tight spacing between keyframes to create a slow-to-fast assembly. Speed curves shape the start, acceleration, and final stop so the result does not feel like one evenly paced slide-in.
Adjustments & Decisions
If every letter enters at once, the animation lacks progression; if the first letter holds too long, the rest feels disconnected. The final timing keeps the initial pause and then completes the assembly quickly.

03 | Blur to Focus
Motion description
The characters first enter in blurred, dispersed positions, then gradually become clear over briefly staggered timings. All characters ultimately come into focus, forming a stable, complete typographic composition.
Motion breakdown
The characters begin slightly dispersed, at lower opacity, and blurred, then move gradually toward their final positions. As the positions converge, the blur decreases and each character becomes clear in sequence. A short offset between letters prevents them from focusing at the same time; subtle scale or motion blur can make the focusing process feel softer.
Adjustments & Decisions
Too much blur reduces legibility, while too much separation turns the motion into a fly-in. The displacement is kept low so the emphasis stays on the transition from soft to sharp.

04 | Scale and Arrange
Motion description
Each character appears at a smaller scale and lower brightness, then enlarges and moves into the correct position in sequence. The animation emphasizes changes in letter size and the arrangement process, creating an orderly, measured rhythm.
Motion breakdown
Each character starts at a smaller scale and lower brightness with a slight positional offset. The characters enlarge in reading order and return to their final arrangement. Their anchor points need to be checked to keep the scaling direction consistent. Staggered scale keyframes create the sequential arrangement, and easing lets each enlargement settle smoothly.
Adjustments & Decisions
Excessive scaling creates a bouncing feel, while inconsistent anchor points make the arrangement look disordered. The final version reduces the overscale and keeps the emphasis on the sequential arrangement.

05 | Minimal Reveal
Motion description
This animation removes complex blur and displacement, revealing the type through simple opacity changes. The letters unfold quickly from left to right and then settle, providing a more restrained visual ending to the five studies.
Motion breakdown
This study mainly uses a text animator and range selector, or per-character opacity controls, to move the reveal range from left to right. Only a very slight positional change remains, with no obvious scale or blur layered on top. The letter timings stay compact, while slightly extended easing at the end lets the complete type settle.
Adjustments & Decisions
The first version needed to restrain unnecessary position, scale, and blur so it could contrast in complexity with the first four studies. Removing those extra effects made the ending cleaner.
